What is rosin?

Rosin is a solventless cannabis concentrate that can easily be made at home byusing heat and pressure to press essential oils out of bud, kief, or hash. Rosin tech was originally used as a method of cleaning up hash to make it look nicer, fairly recently, instagram user @soilgrown_solventless discovered the hair straightener method I will be showing you today.

Using this method we are able to make dabbable concentrates at home in just minutes! I have chosen to make this tutorial using kief, because not all flowers will press as easily as others, but kief will always press out some rosin. These same steps can be used for flower and hash.

Step 1: Preparation & Supplies

  • A hair straightener that can change temperature

  • Scissors

  • Parchment Paper

  • 1 Gram of Kief, Bud, or Hash

  • 1 Coffee filter (or a micron bag)

Step 2: Turn on your Hair Straightener

For the "Hot & Quick" technique, turn your straightener up to 350 degrees or more, and press the rosin for only a couple seconds. This technique generally yields your rosin very quickly but has been known to reduce the quality. For the "Low & Slow" technique, turn the straightener's heat up between 200-250 degrees and press the rosin for a longer period of time - up to 10 seconds. Both techniques work well, it's all about personal preference.

Step 3: Make a Coffee Filter Bag

Cut out a piece of coffee filter, fold the coffee filter into a rectangle, fold the edges twice over, so that they will not open up, leaving one side open and making sure the bag is not wider than your hair straightener plates.

Step 4: Fill Bag with Bud, Kief, or Hash

Start filling the coffee filter bag with kief. Make sure the kief fully fills the bag but is not overly packed. The coffee filter should feel and look like a little kief filled pillow.

Step 5: Step on it!

Put your coffee filter bag into your parchment paper and position the coffee filter onto the heated plate of your hair straightener. With as much force as possible, press down on the hair straightener. I grab my countertops and press myself downwards to add extra pressure.

Step 6: Dab it!

You can now collect and dab the rosin left on your parchment paper!

Generally speaking the lower the temperature the less discoloration that will occur. Its all about finding the right temperature and amount of pressure thats right for your hair straightener.
Have fun pressing!
