Cannabis careers, December 2017 edition

With the holiday commercial season in full swing, traditional retailers arent the only ones looking to hire more elves for their workshops. While probably attributable entirely to the introduction of cannabis-bearing Christmas advent calendars, a sharp increase in postings for Canadian cannabis jobs took place over the past month, with the total number of listings having increased by over 25 percent since our previous careers report.

November brought confirmation that both Yukon and Manitoba will implement hybrid public/private distribution systems, with rumours emerging that Alberta may follow suit. Meanwhile Vancouver city council announced it would continue to license dispensaries while BCs provincial regulations are being developed.

That spells more jobs, to the tune of over 250 new listings featuring the terms cannabis, marijuana, and marihuana posted in the past 30 days. Thats an average of 58 new listings per week throughout November, up 45 percent from the average 40 listings per week in October.

Here are some of the listings available since our previous round-up.

Remote/Telecommuting

Only two new listings this month for those whose location, circumstances, or preferences make telecommuting a priority.

Staffing agency Cannabis at Work is looking for a Learning Manager responsible for developing and deploying training to various audiences related to cannabis legalization. While the agency has noted a preference for the position to be based out of Edmonton, the listing states remote options may be available for the right candidate.

Meanwhile ConversionIR, an online investor marketing service, is seeking a part-time Investment & Stocks Writer/Analyst to work remotely from anywhere in Canada.

Farming and production

Likely to continue being the most in-demand position as long as Canadian producers ramp up expansions and new developments, listings for production technicians and assistants topped the list again in November.

Teema is hiring in BC, Bonify is hiring in Winnipeg, MMG is hiring in Ontario, and Aurora is continuing the hiring phase for their facility in Pointe-Claire, QC.

Newstrike Resources has an opening for a trimmer/greenhouse worker in Brantford, ON, with Canopy Growth Corp and Peace Naturals both seeking harvest labourers for their Ontario facilities.

More advanced skill levels are also in high demand within the production sector. Master growers are currently being sought by Endo Farms Inc in Calgary, and by AtlantiCann Medical in Halifax, NS.

Propagation specialists are being sought by Boom Cultivation in Calgary, and by Aurora in Nisku, AB, while quality assurance specialists are needed at Gabriola Green in British Columbia, GW Cannabis in Manitoba, Qualis in Ontario, and The Green Organic Dutchman in Quebec.

Sales and distribution

Positions abound in distribution, from front-line retail sales to the handling of major international accounts.

Sales reps are needed at dispensaries in Halifax and Vancouver, while Farmacy is seeking a greeter for their dispensary in Victoria.

General Managers are needed at the Stash Club in Vancouver, and at Pacifico Life in Caledonia, ON.

Meanwhile Aurora Cannabis has posted a listing for an International Import/Export Associate at their location in Cremona, AB.

Corporate and office roles

Entry-level positions are usually available throughout virtually every industry, with cannabis being no exception. Sant Cannabis is hiring an administrative assistant in Montreal, and CannTrust is hiring both a receptionist and an executive assistant for their office in Vaughan, ON.

Human Resources positions are available at Peace Naturals in Stayner, ON, and at Aurora in Nisku, AB.

Accounting clerks are needed in Vancouver at MediGreen and Quintet, and in Ottawa at Canopy Growth Corp.

A senior accountant is being sought at Auroras Vancouver offices, while Toronto-based IQ Partners Inc is seeking a new CFO.
