The approved medical conditions for Michigan's medical marijuana program include: cancer, glaucoma, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis C, ALS, Crohn's disease, agitation of Alzheimer's disease, nail patella, cachexia or wasting syndrome, severe and chronic pain, severe nausea, epilepsy, seizures, severe muscle spasms, multiple sclerosis, and additional may be approved.
02. What documentation do I need from the recommending physician to provide with my application?
A physician certification form must be filled out by a physician as part of the application process.
03. Who can write a medical marijuana certification for a patient?
Only a Medical Doctor or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery who is fully licensed by the State of Michigan can sign the physician certification part of the application.
04. How much will it cost to apply for a registry identification card?
The registration fee is $100. Some patients can qualify for a reduced fee of $25.
05. Can minors register in the program?
Yes, minors must also have a parent or legal guardian fill out the minor application form.
06. What is the possession limit?
Yes the possession limit per patient is 2.5 ounces of usable marijuana.
07. Is registration optional or mandatory?
Registration is mandatory in Michigan to benefit from the protections of the law.
08. Does the state honor other states' registries?
Yes, Michigan's program allows for the same protections for patients from other states with valid registry cards.
09. Can I choose any dispensary or do I have to designate a specific one?
Michigan's medical marijuana program does not include dispensary rules or regulations at this time. Only patients or caregivers can be designated to cultivate marijuana.
10. Can a physician revoke a patient's written certification?
A revoking process is not outlined in the Michigan program, but certifying physicians are responsible for follow up and ongoing care.
11. How do I renew my card?
Michigan registry cards are valid for two years. To renew the original application form and physician certification must be filled out.
12. What happens if I lose my card?
For lost cards, a change form and a $10 replacement card fee must be filled out.
13. How does the state law work with federal laws?
It is important to recognize that these state marijuana laws do not change the fact that using marijuana continues to be an offense under Federal law.
14. How can I become a designated caregiver?
A caregiver must be at least 21 years old and designated by a patient on their application form as the caregiver and fill out the caregiver portion of the application. A caregiver can provide care for up to 5 patients.
15. If I am a designated caregiver, can I grow marijuana?
Yes, if the patient identified the caregiver as the grower, the caregiver can grow marijuana, but may not possess more than 12 marijuana plants per patient.
16. Can I be both a qualifying patient and a designated caregiver?
Yes, designated caregivers can also be patients. Per patient possession rules apply.
17. How do dispensaries, collectives and cooperatives work?
Michigan does not outline a policy on dispensaries, collectives and cooperatives. Cultivation of marijuana is limited to the patient or their designated caregiver.
