Individuals with insomnia, which affects all age groups, have a hard time falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. It’s estimated that while 30 to 50 percent of adults suffer from occasional insomnia, 10 percent of the population experiences chronic sleeplessness lasting more than 3 weeks. For some, cannabis may offer relief.

As cannabis ages, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) gradually breaks down and becomes cannabinol (CBN), a cannabinoid with low psychoactive properties. As this conversion progresses, the psychoactive components are diminished, making high-CBN marijuana a frequent choice for those looking for medicinal applications without the “high.”

Known as strong sleep aid, CBN offers the same effects at lower doses as pharmaceutical sedatives. A report last year by cannabis research firm Steep Hill Labs, Inc., stated, “The consumption of 2.5mg to 5mg of CBN has the same level of sedation as a mild pharmaceutical sedative, with a relaxed body sensation similar to 5mg to 10mg of diazepam.”

Because CBN is a product of degraded THC, it is not yet found in high concentrations in many cannabis strains. This will likely change as growers continue to develop strains that meet the needs of medical marijuana patients.  

In the meantime, exposing your marijuana to air and light will allow it to age and begin converting THC to CBN.
