Migraines are a severe form of headache that affect an estimated 15 percent of the worldwide population. Symptoms during an attack can include intense pain on one or both sides of the head; pulsing or throbbing pain; sensitivity to light, sound and smell, nausea and blurred vision. Some patients experience an “aura” sensation before or during an attack --- this can manifest as seeing bright spots or flashes, “holes in vision,” or other visual phenomena.
Although no specific cause of migraines has been identified, they have been linked to genetics, inflammation in specific areas of the brain and high serotonin levels. Recently, research of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) has noted that migraine sufferers tend to have decreased levels of anandamide (AEA and 2-archidon0ylglycerol (2-AG), fatty acid neurotransmitters, a condition known as Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CECD).
Not surprisingly, activity of cannabinoid receptors has been shown to have apositive impact on migraine headaches, suggesting that a lack of endocannabinoids may, in fact, contribute to the development and severity of migraine attacks. Studies also suggest that CBD is effective at decreasing activity of serotonin, and THC minimizes the release of serotonin from blood cells, both indicating that cannabis compounds may play a role in regulating serotonin levels in migraine patients. Additionally, both THC and CBD have recognized anti-inflammatory effects that may mitigate the severity of migraines.
